by Jean Beraud. R?union des Mus?es Nationaux / Art Resource, NY

This Belle ?poque painter and watercolorist was born to a French family living in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1849. He is best known today for his paintings of Parisian Society at the turn of the century and for his detailed depictions of the fashions and customs of late nineteenth-century France. After the death of his father in 1854, the family returned to Paris, where Beraud was educated and where he took part in the great defense of the city during the Siege of Paris in 1870. Subsequently, he became a pupil of the Atelier of Bonnat in 1871 and made his exhibition debut at the Paris Salon in 1873.
